Assignment for Marianne

“Rome scrète et noire” between fiction and reality.

Talking at New York University, La Pietra Florence.

Award winning photographer Alessandro Penso will discuss his project to document the various phases of the European welcome of refugees from 2009 to the present through the hope and suffering of migrants. From rescues at sea to climbing walls, hiking across mountains and running to jump onto moving trucks, every moment is full of desperation. Even in the ‘flat immobility’ of welcome centers and camps there is movement: the anxious beating hearts of those waiting to find out what has been decided for them. Penso’s work on Europe’s refugee crisis was named Time magazine’s Photo Story of the Year in 2015.

This travelling exhibition will retrace the most important stages on the journey these young people make every year, chasing the european dream.

A truck has been chosen as a mobile base for the project, and will leave from Bari and arrive in Brussels, stopping in the cities of Ancona, Rome, Florence, Milan, Geneva and Cortona, and bringing with it a series of events in collaboration with local governments.
